Question: From a Christian to the Muslims:

"Do you have anything like 'Ten Commandments' of the Bible?"

Our Answer:

"Do you have anything like 'ayahs'*  in The Quran?"
*(proofs, evidences and miracles of Allah)

Actually, that is a wonderful question and a beautiful opportunity for us to share some very important points comparing Islam to Christianity, God Willing (inshallah).

Here now, is a comparison between:
The Ten Commandments (Exodus, 20: 3-17 and Deuteronomy 5: 7-21) of The Bible
And -
The verses in Surah Al-Isra' (The Night Journey, 23-48) of The Holy Quran

The Judaio-Christian Bible provides a number of directives from The Creator (Almight God, Allah) dealing with various aspects of the family life. At the same time, we observe in today's translations of the Bible a number inappropriate of things supposedly attributed to the very people who are supposed to be the examples of the teachings.

Such behaviors (misbehaviors?) include: adultry (the prophet David is accused of this in Old Testament), incest (prophet Lot they claim does this with his own daughters, Genesis 19), lying and deceiving with motives of terrorism to slaughter, rape and kill innocent people and take all of their possession (attributed to the tribes of Israel in Genesis, chapter 34), prostitution and more incest between Judah and his daughter-in-law, Tamar (Genesis 38), and even disrespect toward parents is attributed to Jesus (New Testament, "Woman! What have I to do with thee today? John 2:4) and then in the next few verses, they have Jesus turning water into alcohol for a wedding and call it his first miracle (John 2:11) and the wine has been running like rivers in the Catholic church until this day.
Note: Such accusations made against these prophets of Almighty God are not acceptable to Muslims.

Let it be understood, we as Muslims defend the original Bible and what it taught to the people who heard it from their prophets who came to them with revelation and at the same time, were the very best of examples on how to conduct themselves in all aspects of their way of life ('deen' in Arabic). The problem we believe, came along later with copistis and translators who, for whatever reasons, did not bring about 100% accuracy of the original documents. Therefore, according to Muslims, the Bible used to have the perfect teachings of God for those who wanted to be guided in al matters, especially in worship and treatment of family. That is why some of the same lovely teachings still exist even in the translations of what remains of the scripture today.

Now, having said all of this, it is vital for us to produce the evidence of the Last Testament from the same God (Almighty Allah) Who has sent down to all mankind His Final Message and has preserved it without any corruption for all time - The Quran (means: 'Recitation').

Please take time to read and reflect on the meanings and implications of the following "Commanments" found in the Quran. At the same time, keep in mind, the Quran contains other reminders and directives for the human beings in order to best serve their purpose with their Lord and with their fellow man.

The following is only one of many beautiful passages outlining the "Will of Almighty God" (Allah) for His people, those who surrender, submit, obey Him in sincere peace.
NOTE: (the word for these actions in Arabic is "aslama" and is the verb from which "Islam" is taken). Whoever "aslams" is a "mu-aslam" (Muslim).

If you would like to do a comparison between these verses and the verses often referred to as the "Ten Commandments" of the Bible, you may find them in your copy of the Bible in Exodus, chapter 20 and Dueteronomy chapter 5.

Sahih International: Do not make [as equal] with Allah another deity and [thereby] become censured and forsaken.

Sahih International: And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.

(Notice, in Quran the very next commandment after not associating partners in worship with Almighty God, comes this Order from Him to His subjects: Take care of your parents).

Family is very important in society and when the family is properly nutured and supported with correct attitudes and participation from all members, it is most successful and provides many advantages and benefits to all the members of the family as well as the society itself. At the same time, if the family unit is not properly protected and held together the individual members suffer and as a result the society itself will also suffer.

Keep reading, and notice the detail and specific directions for dealing with the parents when they reach old age and are no longer able to care for themselves.

017.024

Sahih International: And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small."

017.025

Sahih International: Your Lord is most knowing of what is within yourselves. If you should be righteous [in intention] - then indeed He is ever, to the often returning [to Him], Forgiving.

017.026

Sahih International: And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully.

017.027

Sahih International: Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful.

017.028

Sahih International: And if you [must] turn away from the needy awaiting mercy from your Lord which you expect, then speak to them a gentle word.

017.029

Sahih International: And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.

017.030

Sahih International: Indeed, your Lord extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]. Indeed He is ever, concerning His servants, Acquainted and Seeing.

017.031

Sahih International: And do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Indeed, their killing is ever a great sin.

017.032

Sahih International: And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.

017.033

Sahih International: And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden, except by right. And whoever is killed unjustly - We have given his heir authority, but let him not exceed limits in [the matter of] taking life. Indeed, he has been supported [by the law].

017.034

Sahih International: And do not approach the property of an orphan, except in the way that is best, until he reaches maturity. And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.

017.035

Sahih International: And give full measure when you measure, and weigh with an even balance. That is the best [way] and best in result.

017.036

Sahih International: And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.

017.037

Sahih International: And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height.

017.038

Sahih International: All that - its evil is ever, in the sight of your Lord, detested.

017.039

Sahih International: That is from what your Lord has revealed to you, [O Muْammad], of wisdom. And, [O mankind], do not make [as equal] with Allah another deity, lest you be thrown into Hell, blamed and banished.

017.040

Sahih International: Then, has your Lord chosen you for [having] sons and taken from among the angels daughters? Indeed, you say a grave saying.

017.041

Sahih International: And We have certainly diversified [the contents] in this Qur'an that mankind may be reminded, but it does not increase the disbelievers except in aversion.

017.042

Sahih International: Say, [O Muْammad], "If there had been with Him [other] gods, as they say, then they [each] would have sought to the Owner of the Throne a way."

017.043

Sahih International: Exalted is He and high above what they say by great sublimity.

017.044

Sahih International: The seven heavens and the earth and whatever is in them exalt Him. And there is not a thing except that it exalts [ Allah ] by His praise, but you do not understand their [way of] exalting. Indeed, He is ever Forbearing and Forgiving.

017.045

Sahih International: And when you recite the Qur'an, We put between you and those who do not believe in the Hereafter a concealed partition.

017.046

Sahih International: And We have placed over their hearts coverings, lest they understand it, and in their ears deafness. And when you mention your Lord alone in the Qur'an, they turn back in aversion.

017.047

Sahih International: We are most knowing of how they listen to it when they listen to you and [of] when they are in private conversation, when the wrongdoers say, "You follow not but a man affected by magic."

017.048

Sahih International: Look how they strike for you comparisons; but they have strayed, so they cannot [find] a way.
