What Do You Say?

New Pope - New Hope? - Or just same old business-as-usual?
* Is there hope for a better future for Catholics, and non-Catholics around the world?
* What issues, if any, will the new popw have with Islam, Muhammadâ„— and Muslims?
* How will this play into the world events we see happening in the Muslim world?
* Will he speak and act favorably toward Islam?
* Or will he bring more division in an already divided world.

What do you say?

Islam Newsroom wants to know what you think about the new pope: Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who is now called Pope Francis. He's from Argentina, and Pope Francis is the new pope with a very untraditional style.

Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church finally elected a new pope to replace Pope Benedict XVI (16th) who, for unknown reasons just quit and walked away from his position as the highest authority on earth to the 1.2 billion people who adhere to that branch of Christianity.

Vatican City (INR) -- Many Call Him the Pontiff of Firsts - Pope Francis I
Jorge Bergolio made history the minute he appeared to the rain soaked crowd of thousands, revealing himself as the latest leader of the world's second largest faith (after Islam). More than 1.2 billion Catholics now have something to find hope in - a man with a plan - a new plan for a new era.

Born in Argentina, he is the first in many aspects for the Catholic world. He's the first Latin American Pope, first Jesuit and first to take the name Francis.

He also broke long standing traditions, one after the other. Some where shocked, others pleasantly surprised at his manner and style. His first major break with tradition came the minute he appeared to over 100,000 jammed together in the rain drenched St. Peter's Square at the Vatican City.

The first order of business for each and every pope has always been to step out on the balcony and bless those of the faithful who had been patiently waiting to get a glimpse of the new pontiff. But it didn't happen. Instead the new pope asked the cheering crowd, "You pray for me!"

One Vatican spokesperson interpreted his action as a new direction for leadership and for the church itself, "a sign he's willing to chart his own path in other ways".
Reverend Rosica commented about the new pope saying he will probably "upset some tonight by not following the formula."

pope pic4That's not the only tradition he broke. He flatly refused to elevate himself on a platform used to raise the pontiff above the cardinals in attendance, as he is to be introduced to the world as the new leader of the faithful. He said [quote], "I'll stay right down here", according to New York's archbishop and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Cardinal Dolan, "He met us on our level".
The new pope faces a very serious challenge as he assumes the leadership of a church now famous for sexual abuse of young boys, by priests, arch priests and even bishops, not to mention the claims of corruption, and serious division and fighting among the church's leaders.

Another break in tradition - the name Francis. Apparently Bergoglio, who has been the archbishop of Buenos Aires and is now 76 years old, has taken the name Francis to signify his affinity for St. Francis of Assisi, who is known for service to the poor and reformer of the Church, also known for his claim of seeing Jesus telling him to "fix my church".

Some have expressed concern over the new pope's over all attitude for being straight to the point and saying what he feels, while being a staunch adherent to the church's social conservative wing.

While he was cardinal he went head-to-head with Argentina's president, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, in opposition to same-sex marriage and treatment of so-called 'gays', along with his refusal to accept the governments giving out contraceptives.
Half a billion Catholics reside in Latin America and when the cardinals selected Bergoglio, the message is now clear about the direction they want for the future of the church.

Pope Francis, born to an Italian immigrant in Buenos Aires, always maintained a simple and austere lifestyle, choosing to reside in a simple apartment instead the palace provided by the church for clergy of his high rank. He also refused the customary chauffeured limo, and instead to the bus to work like everyone else, even cooked his own meals - according to one report. Many considered him as the Voice of the Poor.

Surprise came to many non-Catholics as well. Bergoglio was not even amongst those who were considered by analysts to be most likely candidates for the position of pope.

Immediately after confirmation and acceptance by the new pope, the world leaders began to congratulate and show support for him.
President Barak Obama of the United States had this to say, "As the first pope from the Americas, his selection also speaks to the strength and vitality of a region that is increasingly shaping our world, and alongside millions of Hispanic Americans those of us in the United States share the joy of this historic day."
Ban Ki-moon, U.N. Secretary-General said, "We also share the conviction that we can only resolve the interconnected challenges of today's world through dialog."pope pic0

Latin Americans were as surprised as anyone else and had much to say about it.
Reverend Eduardo Mangiarotti told reporters, "I am truly still very surprised, not just that a Latino pope came out, but he is an Argentinian from Buenos Aires."

Now we have heard what others have said, what do you say?

How will this new pope make a difference in the world where we live? Better? Worse? Same?

BismiAllah,

By Allah, I like a person who doesn't have any pride in himself and who doesn't level him/herself as superior to the other. I believe this guy is not like the other bishops. He is more of Robin hood's fan. Perhaps he will get guidance and many will follow him for it is Allah who knows our hearts and give us guidance.

I just want to say, I pray he will not follow in the footsteps of his predecessor - Benedict.
Those horrible insults to our prophet, peace be upon him, still ring in my ears as in many other believers.
I say to this new pope - "Worship God without Partners" as your Bible says.
"Worship my God and your God and my Lord and your Lord"
Sorry, but I don't always go along with everything published here. Allah Guide Us All, ameen.
Just as Jesus, peace be uopn him said 2,000 years ago.
