Reports say the Taliban fighters who were heavily armed with rockets and firearms guns and rockets set up an ambused to trap a convoy of military troops yesterday (Friday, March 9) in North Waziristan, according to official statments there.
One senior security officer from Peshawar said about the conflict, "it took place about 1 PM when they attacked a vehicle of security forces in Khar Kamar with heavyweapons" and at least seven of the soldiers were killed when the fighters shot their machine guns and rockets right into the military convoy.
Some injured soldiers were airlifted out and taken to Peshawar for treatment.
Although there is no independent confirmation on the death toll of the combatants, reports say up to 9 of the fighters were killed as well.
One official with the intelligence agency says, following the ambush, military choppers and troops attacked in retaliation killing nine of their enemies.
Four vehicles of the security forces were damaged in the attack, according to one official report released by the political administrator for the area.
