We Muslims love to name our kids with nice meanings to remind of certain qualities we hope for in our children.
PLEASE READ IMPORTANT INFORMATION
There are no real "official Muslim names", although it is understandable if someone thinks of names like "Abdullah (slave of God)" or "Amatullah (female slave of God)"; "Abdurahman (slave of Merciful God)"; "Noor Udeen (light of the religion)", as being names of some early Muslims and may Allah have Mercy on them all. However, these are names of Muslims - not to be confused with the term "Muslim or Islamic Names".
Many of these types of names were already in use before the time of the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.
Arabs also used the OPPOSITE MEANING of names of what they wanted or expected for their children. Superstition prevailed in the times before Islam and the idolators (mushrikeen) believed giving opposite meaning of a name you would protect the child from having that trait or charateristic. This is likely why so many of the companions had names that were so strange, and were told to change their names by the prophet, peace be upon him.
Khadijah is a good example of this custom. "KHADIJAH" comes from the same root, meaning: aborted or premature - a child born before the end of full term of gestation; especially 3 or more weeks prior. Definitely NOT something any parent would want.
We Muslims look for names of people with good qualities for our children to be like them.

Just because a name is in the Quran or hadeeth - DOESN'T MEAN IT IS GOOD TO USE FOR NAMES.
Many names in used by Muslims in the world are not in line with Islamic teachings. We should not name our children (or rename new Muslims) until we check for proof of the names.
