The tech-heavy Nasdaq added 5.40 points (0.38 per cent) to 1,431.50 and the broad-market Standard and Poor's 500 index increased 5.37 points (0.72 per cent) to a preliminary close of 756.11.
About 8.00am AEDT the Australian dollar is buying 65.78 US cents.
Wall Street was coming off a strong rally Thursday (local time), capping gains of more than 10 per cent for the main indexes, amid optimism that the worst may be over for the financial sector and possibly the economy.
