Serbs Ordered To Pay For Mosques
-(What About the 200,000 Dead?)
BANJA LUKA — A Bosnian court ordered Serb authorities, to compensate Muslims for the destruction of mosques during the country's deadly civil war.
The court ordered $42 million in compensation for Bosnian Muslims for the destruction of 16 mosques in the Serb-controlled town of Banja Luka. The Islamic Community says more than 200,000 died and 1,000 Muslim . . .
worship places were destroyed or damaged during the war.
During the war, Serb forces destroyed the mosques, including the 15th century Arnaudija and 16th century Ferhadija, during overnight curfews. The Ferhadija Mosque, one of the finest outside the Arab world, was on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
"The most important is the fact that the Serb Republic has for the first time, acknowledged the responsibility for the destruction of religious objects during the war," lawyer Esad Hrvacic told Reuters.
Hrvacic said the verdict, which came nine years after Bosnian Muslims filed a lawsuit for wartime damages, has a "historic importance". He said Serb authorities tried to hide traces of destruction and even removed the mosques from Banja Luka master plans to prevent their reconstruction. "We expect that the authorities will meet their obligations in a dignified manner and take over the responsibility and correct the past mistakes," he said.
In 1992, Bosnia fell into a devastating civil war left 200,000 people dead and millions displaced. In the final months of the war, Serb forces overran the city of Srebrenica, killing some 8,000 Muslim men and boys in one of the most shocking massacres in modern history.
The 1995 Dayton peace accord ended the war by splitting Bosnia into two ethnically-based autonomous regions, the Muslim-Croat (Catholic) federation and the Serb (Protestant Christian) Republic.
