Cell Phone - In Salat?
- Yusuf Estes
You're in salah and someone's cell phone rings? And they answer it?!
You know how it is - Friday Jummuah salah - everyone is silent - imam is giving the khutbah - Suddenly "Nokia theme song" da-da-ddadd-daa-daa.
You look around thinking, "What idiot forgot to shut off his cell phone?" But then you notice -
everyone is looking at you.
OOOPS! It's your phone . . . "Oh wow, I can't believe it." -How embarassing.
Can you believe it? – No way! And the kind of music and songs coming out of these Ring Tones?? Are you kidding me? Pop singers - loud music - bad words . . . "Jingle Bells"in the masjid? In salat?
PLEASE- Brothers and sisters! Come on, we can do better than this.
One time I told our imam, "Just before you start the Jummumah speech (khutbah), tell everyone to turn on their cell phones and pagers." He said, "You mean, turn OFF their cellphones and pagers?" I said, "No – Turnthem ON. Then tell them, 'If your phone goes off during my speech, you have to donate $25 dollars to the mosque. Unless youare a doctor, medical technician or lawyer -of course, in that case, youpay $100 dollars because you can afford it!'"
Then I told the imam he will never have to do fund raising for the mosque again. “Just get everyones cell phone number and then take your own phone and call them upduring your speeches."
Well it might word (for awhile).
Did you ever wonder what would happen if we treated our salat like wetreat our cell phones?
What if we -
- used it every day, many times a day?- planed our activities with it?
- made sure to always take care of it?
- turn to it when ever we need something?
- teach our children to use it as soon as they are old enough?
- use it to get answers to problems?
- make sure to use it while we travel?
- make sure to go back and get it if we forgot it?
- act like we can't live without it?
- use it in all emergencies?
This really makes you think - "When is it time for the nexts alat?"
Oh, and one more thing- Cell phones don't go everywhere in the world – they have limited service – they go dead – they need charging – battery replacement – service costs– And worst of all, the cell phone companies have no mercy or compassion when you are having hard times.
