Dr. Dirks is a former preacher (deacon) of the United Methodist Church and convert to Islam. He holds a Master's degree in Divinity from Harvard University and a Doctorate in Psychology from the University of Denver. He authored the book, "The Cross and the Crescent: An Interfaith Dialogue between Christianity and Islam", in 2001. He also wrote, "Abraham: The Friend of God", in 2002.
Dr. Dirks has also published more than 60 articles in the field of clinical psychology, and more than 150 articles on Arabian horses.
