RIYADH – Saudi security personnel have achieved great success against deviant groups and aborted more than 95 percent of terrorist plots.
Moreover, efforts exerted by the Kingdom in combating terrorism have attracted the attention of international anti-terror organizations, and several countries have benefited from the experiences of the Kingdom in addressing the threat of terrorism.
In this context, the Kingdom has signed several agreements on combating terrorism, committed to the implementation of international resolutions issued by the UN Security Council in this regard, and ratified a number of conventions and relevant international treaties.
The International Counter-Terrorism Conference held in Riyadh in February 2005 highlighted one of the great efforts of the Kingdom in fighting this global scourge.
The Riyadh Declaration, issued at the end of the conference, stressed that terrorism poses a threat to world peace and security and called for unified efforts to combat it.
King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, also called for the establishment of an international center for the exchange of information and experiences among countries and the creation of a security and intelligence database. Later, the Kingdom submitted a draft resolution to the UN General Assembly calling for the formation of a working group to study the conference’s recommendations.
The recommendations also included the establishment of an International Counter-Terrorism Center and Crown Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz, Deputy Premier, Minister of Defense and Aviation and Inspector General, proposed this in his speech before the UN General Assembly on Sept. 16, 2005.
At the local level, the Kingdom has adopted a comprehensive strategy to fight terrorism, and has made certain that all institutions of society participate in the implementation of this strategy.
The Kingdom’s scholars have succeeded in clarifying that terrorism is contrary to the teachings of Islam, urging all citizens and residents to cooperate with security authorities in confronting the deviant group.
Scholars have also played a major role in advising some of those individuals affected by the machinations of the deviant group.
Simultaneously, security forces have achieved great success in tracking down individuals involved in terrorist crimes and carrying out a large number of preemptive operations in various parts of the Kingdom.
