Salam alaykum Yusuf Estes - I have heard in your tapes and CDs, Prophet, peace be upon him.
Question:
Did Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, have some miracles? (besides the Quran)
Answer:
Bismillah was salat was sallam 'ala Rasoolullah. Allahu 'Alim.Salam alaykum brother and thank you for a very good question. We as Muslims know that Allah sent messengers with clear proofs they were in fact, on authority from Him to their people. These proofs did include what we call 'miracles' or instances occurring that cannot be explained other than to atribute them to something beyond our ability to imagine.Definitely - YES! Our prophet, peace be upon him, did have many miracles, and what's more his miracles are considered by some scholars to be even greater than other prophets, peace be upon them all.I once heard a scholar give a talk on this topic based on what other scholars had written on this topic of the prophet's miracles. It was most excellent because it brought out the miracles of other prophets and then the comparison to the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, as the last and final prophet of Allah.
Prophet Muhammad's Miracles
Refer also to Khayru-d-Din Wanili, Mu`jazat al-Mustapha [3rd ed., Maktabah as-Sawadi, Jeddah]. Consult this for the evidences for what is mentioned in this chapter.]
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, possessed many amazing miracles, along with manifestations and signs from Allah to demonstrate [his truthfulness] reaching thousands of people and these are very well known. We have a long list of miracles [below].
But first, we must mention the very biggest among the miracles or signs from Allah given to the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, must be the Quran. For in the history of the world there has never been, nor will there ever be - Any Book Like It.
The Qur'an, is the manifest and clear miracle and brilliant proof, falsehood cannot approach it from before it or behind it. It is a revelation from One Who is All-Wise and Praiseworthy.
Quran incapacitates the most eloquent of people in the most eloquent of times to produce a single chapter that would be comparable to it, even if the whole of creation were to gather for that purpose. Allah, the Exalted says,
"Say: If the whole of mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like of it, even if they assisted each other." [Al-Israa' (17): 88]
Quran challenged all people to this despite their large numbers, their eloquence and their severe enmity, and it challenges people to this day.
But your question asks for miracles "Other than Quran" for our prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
Actually Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, did have many miracles other than Quran. So many in fact, it is not possible to list them all there because there really are so many.
But we would like to offer a few famous examples here:
~ Splitting of the moon
~ Water flowing from between his fingers
~ Increasing the amount of food and water
~ Glorification of the food
~ Palm tree crying for him
~ Stones greeting him
~ Talking of the poisoned leg [of a roasted sheep]
~ Trees walking towards him
~ Two trees far apart came together and then split apart again
~ Barren [and dry] sheep giving milk
~ He wiped 'Abdullah bin 'Atiq's diseased leg. It was immediately cured
More ~
~ He replaced the eye of Qatidah bin an-Nu`man to its normal place with his hand even though it had been knocked out in battle.
~ He spit lightly into the eye of Ali when it was very inflamed and it was cured almost immediately .
~ He informed in advance the place of death where certain idolators (enemies) would die on the Day of Badr. He said, "This is the place so-and-so and this is the place of such-and-such". It happened just as he said.
~ He said a group of his nation would traverse an ocean and Umm Haram would be amongst them. It happened.
~ That everything that was shown to him (vision) of the ends of the earth and displayed to him would be opened for his nation (Muslims did in fact, bring Islam everywhere to the near and far east)
~ He told his followers Suraqah bin Malik (a follower) would one day wear the pants of Chosroes.
~ He also mentioned the treasures of Chosroes would be spent by his nation for the sake of Allah, the Glorious, The Magnificent.
~ He warned his nation they would be tempted by wealth, and allured by things of this world (that is the case today)
~ And more ~
~ He said Hasan bin 'Ali (his own grandson) would mediate between two large parties of Muslimes who would be at war with each other (it happened)
~ He informed us Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (originally a warrior against Muslims, who later came to Islam) would live to benefit nations and punish others.
~ He said An-Najashi (Christian king of Ethiopia) had died on this particular day even though the king was in Ethiopia and that al-Aswad al-`Ansi had been killed on this particular day while he was in Yemen at the time.
~ He predicted Muslims would fight the Turks who were described as having small eyes, wide faces and small, chiselled noses.
~ He also prophesied one day Yemen, Syria and Iraq would come under the control of the Muslims.
~ He informed us the Muslims would comprise three armies, an army in Syria, and army in Yemen and an army in Iraq
~ He also said these armies conquer Egypt, a land whose [unit of land measurement] was the Qirat, that they should deal with their people well for they have protection [being Coptic Christians] and ties of kinship [through Hajar, the wife of Ibrahim, peace be upon him].
~ He told his followers Awais al-Qarni would come to them from the auxiliaries of Yemen, he would be afflicted with leprosy and it would be healed except for the space of a dirham. This did occur after the death of the prophet, peace be upon him, exactly as predicted and he indeed arrived during the rule of 'Umar.
~ Still more ~
~ He informed us that a group of his nation would always be upon the truth
~ He said mankind would become many in number, but the Answar (supporters of Muslims in Madinah) would go down in number.
~ He predicted the Ansar would not get their fair share (of wealth or leadership)
~ He prophesied people would get to the point of asking philosophical questions (about: "reality", "existence", "knowledge", "reason", etc.) until they would ask, "So, if Allah created everything . . . Who created Allah?" [Bukhari & Muslim]
~ He predicted Ruwayfi bin Thabit would live a long life (he did)
~ He prophesied Ammar bin Yasir (son of first woman murdered by enemies of Islam) would be killed by a group of Muslims who were the transgressors (wrong way).
~ He predicted, "As the Jews & Christians divide up into 71 or 72 sects (in their religions), the Muslims would divide into 73, all fighting each other and all of them in the Hell Fire - except those who remained on the original Way of Islam and his sunnah (way of life). -- This one is crystal clear today!
~ He informed us that a fire would emanate from the land of Hijaz (Saudi Arabia) and all of this has occurred exactly as he (sallallahu `alayhe wa sallam) said it would.
~ He said to Thabit bin Qays, "You will live being praised... and you will die as a martyr", and he lived being praised and was martyred at al-Yamamah.
~ On another occassion, prophet, peace be upon him, said to `Uthman bin Afan, "You will be afflicted by a "fitnah" [Arabic = 'severe calamity']." [Sure enough, the "fitnah" was 'Uthman being the khalifa or ruler of the Muslims, but at the end of his life, he was held like a prisoner in his own home by insurgents and then killed by these transgressors.]
~ The prophet, peace be upon him, told his companions about a person amongst the Muslims who had just fought in severe combat:
"He will be from amongst the denizens of the Fire", and sure enough this man later committed suicide.
~ One time, Wabisah bin Ma`bad came to him in order to ask him about righteousness and sin upon which he asked, "Have you come to ask about righteousness and sin?"
~ He once said to `Ali, az-Zubair and al-Miqdad:
"Go to the garden of Khakh for indeed there is Dha`inah who has a book with her."
[Dha`inah is the woman with whom Hasib al-Balta`ah (radhiAllahu `anhu) had sent a letter to the people of Mecca in order to inform them of the plans of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu `alayhe wa sallam) to fight them.
The garden of Khakh is a place falling between Mecca and Madinah.
They found her there but at first she denied having any such book but then finally she took it out from within the braids of her hair.
It was concerning this that the first verses of Surah Mumtahinah were revealed.
Refer to Bukhari [no. 3983] and Muslim [no. 2494] and Tafsir ibn Kathir [4/344]
~ He said to Abi Hurayrah, when Satan had stolen some dates, "Indeed he shall return" and he did.
~ He said, "The one who gives the most in charity will be the first to join me (after his death)". His wife Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah have mercy on her) was the most charitable of them and she was the first to join him (pass away).
Refer to Muslim [no. 2452]
~ He said to 'Abdullah bin Sallam, "You will remain upon Islam until you die." (Sure enough, he did)
~ He prayed for Anas to have wealth and many sons and for him to live a long life. It all happened. He lived for more than one hundred years and not one of the Ansar was richer than Anas and one hundred and twenty of his children had already been buried before the arrival of al-Hajjaj [to Basrah].
Sahih Bukhari no. 1982 and others.
~ He prayed to Allah that Islam be strengthened through either 'Umar bin al-Khattab or Abu Jahl, and Allah strengthened it through `Umar (radiyAllahu `anhu).
~ He supplicated against the enemy Suraqah bin Malik and the feet of his horse sank into the earth and he was thrown off, he called out asking for safe conduct and was granted it.
Then he asked the Prophet, peace be upon him, to make a supplication for him.
~ He prayed to Allah to remove the feeling of the bitter cold and heat from 'Ali. And 'Ali never did he feel cold or hot after that.
~ He prayed for Hudhayfah, on the night he sent him to spy on the Confederates, that Hudhayfah would not feel the cold. And Hudhayfah did not until he had returned.
~ He prayed for Abdullah ibn 'Abbas, asking Allah to grant him understanding of the religion and it was so.
~ He supplicated against 'Utbah bin Abi Lahb (a vicious enemy), asking Allah to cause a dog from amongst his dogs to overcome 'Utbah. And sure enough, he was killed by a lion at az-Zarqa.
~ And Even More ~
~ He also prayed asking Allah for the descent of rain when they asked him to at the time of drought. There was not a single cloud in the sky, and then when he had supplicated, the clouds gathered like mountains and it rained until the next Friday. It rained so much that they had to come back and ask him to supplicate and stop the rain, so he supplicated and the rain stopped and they walked out into the glaring sun.
~ He prayed for Abu Talhah and his wife, Umm. Sulaym, to be blessed in the night they had spent together and she became pregnant and gave birth to 'Abdullah. He had nine children and all of them were scholars.
He prayed for the mother of Abu Hurayrah, asked that she be guided to Islam. Abu Hurayrah left to find she had performed the ritual bath, because she had accepted Islam.
~ He prayed for Umm Qays bint Muhsin, the sister of `Ukkasha, that she live a long life. And we do not know of another woman who lived as long as she did.
This was reported by an-Nasa'i the chapter concerning washing the deceased.
~ On the Day of Hunain he threw a handful of dirt at the disbelievers and said, "May their faces be disfigured", and Allah, the Exalted, vanquished them, filling their eyes with dirt.
~ He once went out to one hundred of the Quraysh who were waiting to do something horrible to him and he put dirt on their heads and went on his way without their seeing him.
~ And this famous one known as the 'Hadith of Jibril' ~
~ Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, was visited by a guest whom none of the companions knew. Yet, he had no signs of travel on him or his clothes. He appoached the prophet, peace be upon him, knelt down in front of him, putting his hands on his thighs and asked him some questions about Islam, to which the prophet, peace be upon him, replied clearly.
Then the man asked him, "When is the hour (Last Day)?"
The prophet, peace be upon him, told him ~ "I don't know, and you don't know. But the signs are when you see a slave will give birth to the master and the poor badwins (desert sheperds) are competing to BUILD TOWERS IN THE DESERT." [Forty Hadith]
Who could look around at all the constant construction going day and night in Mecca, Madina, Doha, Dubai and the gulf area without seeing clear proof of the reality of the prophicies of Muhammad, peace be upon him.
I saved the most impressive miracle (to me) for last ~ Althought not from hadith of Muhammad, peace be upon him, it is in the HADITH IN THE BOOK OF ALLAH (Quran is sometimes called 'Hadith Kitab Allah') ~
The Qur’an gave the news that the dead body of Pharaoh would one day be discovered ~
In ancient Egypt, Pharaoh used to torture the Children of Israel. God sent Moses to him to invite him to believe in One God and allow the Israelites to leave Egypt with Moses. Pharaoh refused and the struggle between them continued for a long time. One night Moses marched with the Children of Israel to escape. Pharaoh, found out and took off after them. When Moses reached the Red Sea, he hit it with his staff, and suddenly a trench opened up all across the Red Sea. When Pharaoh attempted to follow him, the trench closed back up and engulfed Pharaoh along with his troops.
While narrating this event, The Qur’an makes a very interesting prediction:
Today We shall preserve your body that you may be a sign to those after you: although most men give no heed to Our signs. (Yunus, 10.92)
The dead body of Pharaoh was later found floating on the Western shores of the Sinai peninsula. The native residents can still show you to this land, which is now known as Jabal Firawn (Hill of Pharaoh). A few miles from this hill is a hot spring called Hammam Firawn (the Bath of Pharaoh).

Today the mummy of Pharaoh has been discovered again, and was examined by Dr. Maurice Bucaille, a French scientist who later became a Muslim, after learning more about Islam.
How could anyone predict something from the past (Moses and Pharaoh) to have something occur in the future (Pharaoh's body on tour in exhibits for all to see)?
